The Swiss Genealogical Society SGS

A genealogical how-to for Americans of Swiss descent

Should you wish to conduct genealogical research of your ancestors in Switzerland, this information will provide you with the first steps on how to proceed. Would you like to know who your ancestors were? Do you need help, at least to get started with your own research? The Swiss Genealogical Society (SGS) offers to help you search for traces of your ancestors.

Aims and Services

  • Meetings are held semi-annually at different locations in Switzerland.
  • SGS helps all interested members to gain access to genealogy, and fosters contact between members.
  • The "Mitteilungsblatt" is published three times a year. This bulletin informs members on a regular basis about the society's activities, lectures, meetings and courses organized by regional genealogical societies, new publications added to the society's library as well as other tools for genealogical research.
  • A Yearbook provides in-depth articles on topics of interest for genealogical research in Switzerland.
  • The library is housed at the Swiss National Library in Bern, and consists of some 7,000 items. It includes basic genealogical literature as well as periodicals and individual family histories.
  • A Central Information Office hosts a data base of more than 120,000 references of varying type and provides general information to both the novice and the experienced researcher.
  • A Document Sales Office supplies genealogical literature and brochures as well as genealogical tools written up by SGS members within the "Blue Series".
  • A mailing list is organized for members of SGS and participating regional societies. This list is designed for discussions amongst members and fast communication between board and membership.
  • For information on genealogical research in Switzerland http://swiss.genealogy.net/ is supported.
