Swiss Roots was created in Spring 2006 to reach out to people of Swiss heritage and also those with an affinity to Switzerland. Through programs that foster an active dialogue between Switzerland and the USA and showcasing the best in Swiss innovation, culture, history, education and business—Swiss Roots aims to communicate with its target audience in online and offline exchanges. The program's centrepiece www.swissroots.org is a dynamic website that serves as a cultural gateway to the "globally Swiss"—people who identify with "Swiss-ness" either through heritage or cultural affinity. Our members are from the United States, Switzerland and nations from all over the globe and they together they form an international and interactive web community.

Swiss Roots is maintained by the Consulate General of Switzerland in New York as well as other official Swiss channels in the US and the cooperation of numerous grassroots Swiss Associations. Swiss Roots is supported by Presence Switzerland and Switzerland Tourism as well as private sector companies.
